What is a sauna hat?

Yes, and the mechanism is simple physics rather than wellness folklore. A Finnish sauna can sit at 80–100°C, but the room is strongly stratified: the bench air near the ceiling is markedly hotter than the air at your feet. Your head sits in the hottest layer.

Wool felt is a natural insulator — a dense, disordered mat of fibre holding still air. Placed over the crown, it reduces the rate at which that hottest air heats your scalp. The rest of the body still receives the full thermal load; the head simply stops being the limiting factor.

What people notice: less light-headedness, less pressure at the temples, hair that does not feel scorched, and the ability to finish the session rather than leave early.

Comfort. High heat is easier to sit inside when the head is not the hottest part of you.

Protection. Repeated dry heat is hard on hair and scalp. Felt is a physical barrier.

Time. The benefits of heat bathing come from full, unhurried cycles. Anything that shortens the cycle shortens the ritual.

Traditionally: wool felt. Felt is not woven. Fibre is matted together with water, heat and pressure until it becomes a single dense material, then blocked by hand over a form. That process is why felt insulates well, absorbs moisture without feeling wet, survives hundreds of heat cycles and holds its shape.

Synthetic blends, internal linings and chemically softened or bleached fibres all behave badly in a hot room — they trap moisture, degrade and sit against skin that is open and warm. This is the reason TEJ's first object is unlined, undyed and made from traceable natural wool felted with nothing but water, heat and pressure.

Pull it down so the crown is fully covered and the brim sits just above the ears. A dry hat insulates more; a lightly dampened hat feels cooler for longer. Both are correct — it depends on how hot the room runs and how long you intend to stay.

Between rounds, take it off with everything else. Cooling is part of the cycle, not an interruption to it.
