What actually happens to the body in a sauna?
Skin temperature, blood flow, heart rate, sweat — and an honest line between evidence and enthusiasm.
A sauna is a thermal problem the body has to solve. Air at 80–100°C is far hotter than you are, so heat moves into you faster than you shed it, and everything that follows — the flush, the pulse, the sweat — is the body defending a core temperature it will not negotiate on.
The first few minutes: skin
Skin temperature rises quickly, often reaching around 40°C within minutes, while core temperature moves slowly and much less — typically well under a degree in an ordinary session. That gap is the whole story. The skin is the buffer; the core is what is being protected.
Blood vessels near the surface dilate, and a substantial share of circulation is redirected outward to carry heat to the skin where it can be lost. This is why the skin reddens and why the hands and feet feel full.
Heart rate, and why it climbs
With blood moving to the periphery, the heart compensates. Heart rate commonly rises to roughly 100–150 beats per minute in a hot sauna, depending on temperature, duration and the individual. Stroke volume and cardiac output increase; blood pressure typically falls slightly during the session as vessels dilate.
This is often described as being 'like moderate exercise'. It is a fair comparison for heart rate, and a poor one for everything else: there is no muscular work, no meaningful oxygen demand from the legs, and no training stimulus of the kind exercise provides. Heat is not a substitute for movement.
Sweat: cooling, not cleaning
Sweating begins early and can reach half a litre or more in a session. Its function is evaporative cooling — and in a humid room, where evaporation is limited, you sweat more and cool less, which is why steam feels harder than dry heat at a lower temperature.
Sweat is mostly water with sodium, chloride, potassium and small quantities of other substances. It is a temperature mechanism, not an excretory organ. The liver and kidneys handle that work, and no amount of sweating meaningfully substitutes for them. Rehydration matters; the cleansing narrative does not hold up.
Why the head goes first
Sauna air is strongly stratified: the layer at head height can be tens of degrees hotter than the air at your feet. The head also has dense surface circulation and a thin skull covering, so it heats fast and communicates discomfort early. Light-headedness and pressure at the temples usually arrive well before the rest of the body has had enough.
That is the practical reason for a felt hat, and the reason the head is where most people's sessions actually end.
What the evidence supports — and what it does not
Confident: the acute physiology above. Heat raises skin temperature, redistributes blood flow, raises heart rate, provokes sweating, and lowers blood pressure during and shortly after a session. This is well-described laboratory work.
Promising, not proven: the long-term outcomes. Finnish cohort studies have reported that men who used a sauna 4–7 times a week had lower rates of fatal cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality than once-weekly users (Laukkanen et al., 2015). That is a striking signal, and we take it seriously. It is also observational, in a population with a strong sauna culture — the studies adjust for income, health and habit, but adjustment is not proof of cause.
Unsupported: detoxification through sweat, fat loss beyond temporary water weight, and immune claims stated as fact. Reviews of dry sauna bathing note promising findings alongside small sample sizes and inconsistent protocols (Hussain & Cohen, 2018).
Lived experience: the sleep, the settled feeling afterwards, the mood. For me, that hour is the most reliable way I know to come back to myself, and many people describe something close to it. That is not a clinical finding, and we will not dress it as one — but it is the reason we started here, and it is worth naming rather than editing out.
Reasonable caution
Heat is a real physiological load. General guidance, not medical advice — speak to a clinician if any of this applies to you.
- Cardiovascular conditions, unstable blood pressure or recent cardiac events warrant a conversation with a doctor before regular sauna use.
- Alcohol and heat are a poor combination: both affect blood pressure and judgement of how hot you are.
- Pregnancy changes the calculation on core temperature; take specific advice.
- Standing up quickly after a session is the most common cause of a faint. Sit first.

- Most people find 8–15 minutes per round comfortable, with cooling and rest between rounds. Temperature, humidity, hydration and experience all shift that. The impulse to leave is useful information, not weakness.
