Sauna hat vs cap: what actually works in the heat
The question sounds small, but the difference is real. A sauna hat is not a style choice — it is a tool shaped for a specific environment. Most everyday caps are not.
What each one is made for
A sauna hat is designed to insulate the head from the hottest air in the room, absorb sweat without feeling wet, and survive repeated heat cycles. A baseball cap is designed to shade the eyes. A beanie is designed to keep heat in. Those are different jobs, and the materials reflect that.
Insulation: the still-air test

A sauna cycle is not like wearing a hat outdoors. It is 80–100°C dry heat, followed by cooling, followed by repeat exposure. Felt is made with the same elements — water, heat and pressure — so it tolerates the cycle. Fossil-derived fabrics degrade, glue linings soften, and structured caps warp.

If you are experimenting and only have a cotton cap, it is better than nothing for a single session, but it will not protect the head, hair or the ritual in the same way.
