Do we need to feel worse to believe something is working?
Somewhere along the way, difficulty became the proof. It is worth asking who that serves.
Two people leave the same sauna. One stayed twelve minutes and feels clear. The other stayed twenty-five, came out grey, and is more certain it worked. Difficulty has become our shorthand for efficacy, and it is worth asking where that reflex came from and what it costs.
The effort heuristic
We consistently value things more when they cost us something. Psychologists call it the effort heuristic, and it is not irrational — effort usually does correlate with results in work, learning and training. The trouble is that the correlation is not universal, and the heuristic does not know that.
Applied to the body it produces a specific error: treating the sensation of strain as the mechanism rather than a side effect. Nine minutes in cold water is not three times better than three. Past a point, it is simply colder, riskier and more impressive to describe.
Where adaptation is real
There is a genuine principle underneath. Hormesis — a beneficial adaptive response to a mild stressor — is real in heat acclimation, in exercise, in altitude. The body meets a manageable challenge and gets better at meeting it. Regular sauna use produces measurable heat adaptation: earlier sweating, better plasma volume, greater comfort at the same temperature.
But every one of those examples has a dose curve with a peak and then a decline. The stressor works because it is proportionate and because recovery follows it. 'More is better' is precisely the misreading that turns an adaptive stimulus into an injury.
Chosen discomfort versus ignoring the body
These look identical from outside and are opposites from inside. Chosen discomfort is deliberate, bounded and attended to: you know why you are there, you are reading the signal, and you have decided in advance what would make you stop. Ignoring the body is overriding the signal because stopping would mean something about you.
The tell is usually in the reason. 'I want to see whether the second round feels different' is one thing. 'I said four minutes' is another. The first is curiosity. The second is a promise made to an audience, even if the audience is only yourself.
People are not the same
Cold tolerance varies enormously with body composition, sex, age, medication, thyroid function, previous exposure and sheer genetic luck. So does heat tolerance. Two people at the same water temperature are not having the same physiological experience, and the one who lasts longer has not demonstrated superior character.
This matters because so much thermal content online is written by outliers, filmed by outliers, and read as a standard. The most common harm in wellbeing culture is not injury. It is a reasonable person concluding they are failing at something they are actually doing well.
The social layer
Extremity is legible in a way that consistency is not. A photograph of an ice hole travels; the fact that someone has taken an unremarkable twelve-minute sauna twice a week for six years does not. Platforms select for the first, and then the first becomes the picture of what the practice is.
There is also a moral undertone worth naming. Endurance flatters us — it makes wellbeing a matter of discipline and therefore of virtue, which quietly implies that people who are not thriving simply have not tried hard enough. That is a bad model of health and an unkind one.

- What would make you stop? Decide before you go in. If there is no answer, you are not practising, you are testing.
- Who is this duration for? Your body, your curiosity, or a number you told someone about.
- How do you feel two hours later? The most honest measure of a session, and the one nobody posts.
- Would a shorter version still be worth doing? If not, the discomfort may be doing the meaning rather than the work.
Common questions
- Is more time in a sauna or cold plunge better?
- Not reliably. Heat and cold adaptation follow a dose curve with a peak and then diminishing or negative returns. Longer exposures increase risk without proportionate benefit, and cold tolerance in particular varies widely between individuals.
- Is discomfort necessary for the benefit?
- Some challenge is part of how adaptation works, but the strain itself is not the mechanism. A comfortable, consistent practice generally beats an extreme, occasional one.
- How do I know if I am pushing too hard?
- Watch how you feel later the same day and the next morning, rather than how heroic the session felt. Poor sleep, lingering fatigue and dread before the next session are all signals.
