A wardrobe detox, step by step

Most wardrobes contain more fossil-derived fibre than their owners realise, largely because composition labels are small and nobody reads them twice. A wardrobe detox is four steps: audit, change how you wash, replace deliberately, and keep things longer. None of it requires throwing away clothes that still work.
Step one: audit before you change anything
Spend an hour reading labels. Sort roughly into three piles: mostly natural (wool, cotton, linen, hemp, Tencel), blended, and mostly fossil-derived (polyester, nylon, acrylic, elastane). You are not judging anything yet — you are finding out what you actually own.
Two patterns usually appear. Activewear and fleece dominate the fossil-derived pile, and they are also the items washed most often. That overlap, rather than the total count, is what matters.
Step two: change how you wash
This is the highest-leverage step and it applies to the clothes you already own. Wash less frequently, at lower temperatures, on shorter cycles, with fuller loads. Abrasion between garments is what releases fibre; a crowded, hot, long cycle is the worst case.
Add a microfibre catch bag or a machine filter for the fossil-derived pile in particular. Air-dry where you can — tumble drying accelerates surface wear, which is exactly what causes shedding.
Wool needs almost none of this. Airing a wool garment overnight usually replaces a wash entirely, which is part of why it stays in service for years.
Step three: replace deliberately
As items wear out, replace them with something chosen rather than defaulted to. A few rules that hold up in practice:
- Natural next to skin Base layers, underwear, tees and anything worn against sweat. Wool and cotton handle moisture and odour without chemical finishes.
- Read stretch as a percentage A garment with a few per cent stretch in a natural-fibre fabric is a very different object from one that is fossil-derived throughout. Stretch that keeps a garment fitting for a decade is earning its place.
- Fewer, denser, better made Loose, brushed and fuzzy constructions shed most. Dense knits and proper woven fabric shed least and hold their shape longer.
- Repairable by design Visible seams, replaceable fastenings and single-fibre construction all make a garment worth mending rather than binning.
- Buy for the decade The largest environmental cost of a garment is its replacement. One piece kept ten years beats five kept two.
Step four: what to do with what you remove
Do not send a bin bag to landfill in the name of clean living. Wear the fossil-derived items you own until they genuinely fail — with a filter fitted, washed gently. Pass on what still has life. Recycle textiles through a dedicated scheme rather than kerbside collection, and accept that current textile recycling is limited in what it can actually do.
The honest end state is not a wardrobe with zero plastic in it. It is a smaller wardrobe of things you chose on purpose, washed carefully, kept for years.

- Should I throw out my existing activewear?
- No. Manufacturing a replacement has a cost of its own. Keep it, wash it in a filter bag on cool cycles, and replace it thoughtfully when it wears out.
- Is wool practical for everyday wear?
- More than most people expect. It regulates temperature in both directions, resists odour, and needs washing far less often, which is what makes it last.
- How do I read a composition label properly?
- Read the percentages, not the first word. "Cotton-rich" can mean 60% cotton and 40% polyester. Anything with elastane will have a small percentage — that is normal and often useful; the question is what the other 95% is.
